In the heart of Brooklyn Center, a vibrant transformation is taking place at the Shingle Creek Center. What was once a quiet space following the departure of Target has become a bustling ecosystem of culture, commerce, and community, thanks to the vision of ACER (African Career, Education & Resource, Inc.).
In 2023, ACER partnered with the Ignite Business Women's Investment Group—a cooperative formed by local entrepreneurs—to purchase the Shingle Creek Center. Their goal was simple yet profound: to create a space where BIPOC and women-owned businesses can thrive.
Not Just A Building

Walk into the newly renovated ACER office, and you won't just find desks and computers. You'll find a community living room full of potential. From free co-working spaces for home-based entrepreneurs to training rooms available at no cost for community education, ACER has turned real estate into a resource.
"We want more people to come this way and spend their dollars in the Brooklyn Center economy and see the amazing things this city has to offer," says Sohini McClannahan, ACER's Communications Manager.
A World of Flavor and Fashion

The Shingle Creek Center has become a premier destination for those seeking authentic cultural experiences. Whether it's the "soul-filling" West African jollof rice at Oga Madam Kitchen, the beloved birria tacos at Brothers Taqueria, or the unique Honduran-Asian fusion at the newly opened Antojitos Latinos, the center is a testament to the city's diversity.
Beyond food, the center hosts Favor Creations, a fashion bridal store, a local dance studio, and Treasure Hunt Early Learning Center, a specialized daycare that offers extended hours until 11 p.m. to support parents working second shifts.
Why Brooklyn Center?
According to McClannahan, the "vibrant" spirit of the area comes from its supportive roots. "The community is very supportive here. Cultural representation is important to the mental health of our community...it helps people feel visible, seen, and at home."
As ACER continues to provide technical assistance, marketing support, and a physical home for startups, they are proving that when you invest in people, the whole community prospers.
