Top Minneapolis Boutiques ‘Pop Up’ in Maple Grove
You may or may not have heard about the unique event held last weekend at The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes; the Pop-Up Sale. Don't let the word 'sale' fool you- I wouldn't blog about an ordinary sale! This event brings together some of the top locally owned, Minneapolis boutiques in one location.
9/3/15 UPDATE: the pop-up shop will be at The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes for at least another month!
You may or may not have heard about the unique event held last weekend at The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes; the Pop-Up Sale. Don’t let the word ‘sale’ fool you- I wouldn't blog about an ordinary sale! The Pop-Up Sale brings together some of the top locally owned, Minneapolis boutiques in one location. The sale literally ‘pops up’ in a vacant store-space and turns it into a temporary shop for roughly 15 boutiques who take the day to celebrate local shopping, get in front of new audiences, and offer their products at deeply discounted prices!
Who could you find at the pop-up sale? Juniper (The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, Maple Grove), Primrose Park (Northeast Minneapolis), Mona Williams (Northeast Minneapolis), Apricot Lane (St. Louis Park & Mendota Heights), Sisu (Woodbury), and Minq (St. Louis Park), to name a few!
The event was conceived by Liz Schiller, owner of Juniper, and two other area boutique owners: Jennifer Carnahan of Primrose Park, and Patric Richardson of Mona Williams. They worked together with The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes to make the Pop-Up Sale happen. It’s really neat to see a major shopping center supporting local business and working alongside boutiques to put on an event like this.
I got the chance to interview Liz Schiller, of Juniper, and learn more about this cool event:
Q: How often do you host pop up sales?
A: We have had three sales so far. We learn something new with each sale we’ve done, and each one is more successful than the last! Considering their success, hope to continue to do them seasonally, four times per year.
Q: What goes into organizing a pop-up sale?
A: I reach out to a bunch of local retailers, looking for a variety of styles and price points, then coordinate with the center and the retailers to make the sale happen. Each boutique brings their own fixtures and merchandise to display. Jennifer provides the marketing and Patric does displays in the windows leading up to the event.
We also organize a gift basket drawing at each event where shoppers can sign up to win an item from each boutique. Sometimes we have a DJ, sometimes we have wine tasting or snacks... we like to make it a fun event for everyone involved.
Q: What is the benefit of putting on an event like this?
A: These events allow a center or mall to gain a new customer that may not normally shop with them. Our pop-ups in particular draw a boutique customer, as well as a Minneapolis customer who tends to shop boutiques in the city instead of heading to a mall in the suburbs.
It gives retailers and chance to try out a new demographic which comes in handy when considering a new location. We get to share and gain new customers via another boutique's customer base. This is also a great opportunity to clean out a previous season's inventory to make room for the upcoming season!
And finally, the Arbor Lakes shopper gets to see new and unique merchandise not available in chain stores. It's a great opportunity to support local business and gain some style!
Pop-ups are one of retail's hottest trends!
