Too Cool to Hold Hands: Radical Date Ideas

Whether you’re going on a first date or a fifth date, you want to impress the person you’re with and make sure you’re set up for a fun time together. Because let’s face it: a boring date is a bad date. So if you’re looking for something cooler than just dinner and a movie, try one (or several) of these radical date ideas in Minneapolis Northwest. From go-karting to painting to venturing through a corn maze, there are plenty of interesting activities you and your date can enjoy together. Let the laughter flow and good times roll!

Active Dates

ProKART Indoor Racing

Rev your engines at ProKART Indoor Racing, Minnesota’s premier karting facility. You and your date can zoom around the track in state-of-the art karts that go up to 40 miles per hour, and while the weather is nice you can access the outdoor portion of the track, too. The staff at ProKART is passionate about what they do, and they’ll ensure a thrilling (and safe) experience for drivers of all levels. Bonus tip: Maple Grove has Turbo Tuesdays, only $12 per race.

Brunswick Zone XL

You won’t strike out when you take your date to Brunswick Zone XL in Brooklyn Park. Not only does Brunswick Zone have bowling lanes galore, it also features the Game Zone with giant video and arcade games, billiards, bumper cars, and a full-size laser tag arena. Remember to take your date to Brunswick’s bar & grill for sustenance between games. Bonus tip: Check out Slammin’ Sundays - $11.99 gets you two hours of bowling and shoes, one hour of billiards, unlimited laser tag, and a $5 (10-credit) game card.

Artsy Dates

Paint Pub

You don’t have to be Van Gogh to have a great date night at The Paint Pub. Named one of the trendiest nights out in the Twin Cities, The Paint Pub is an art studio café where you and your date can create a featured painting by following the steps provided by the instructor. Sip on wine or beer as you paint side-by-side and compare and contrast your final works of art. Registration is required and The Paint Pub provides all of the art supplies you’ll need. Bonus tip: The Paint Pub has sandwiches, snacks, and desserts available for purchase, so you and your date can grab a bite before, during, or after you paint.

Yellow Tree Theatre

Just as you don’t need to be Van Gogh to create art, you don’t have to be Shakespeare to enjoy theater. Osseo’s professional Yellow Tree Theatre provides an intimate space where every seat is a good seat, and any performance you see will certainly give you and your date lots to discuss afterwards. The theater celebrates its 10th season this year with a lineup of fantastic shows. Bonus tip: Arts for All! If money is a barrier to seeing a show, simply call the Yellow Tree box office and ask about its Arts for All $5 tickets.

String by Jessica Lind Peterson
Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Written by Yellow Tree Theatre’s co-founder Jessica Lind Peterson, this hilarious and heart-warming romantic comedy follows the unlikely courtship between a poet and a pizza delivery boy. String was also the first show to premiere at the theater 10 years ago.

Outdoor Dates

Eastman Nature Center

Begin your dating adventure with an outdoor adventure at Eastman Nature Center in Three Rivers Park District. Spend the day hiking on one of their many trails while also enjoying the fall colors in October; take a casual stroll on the floating boardwalk, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Consider making nature Bingo cards and checking off the things you and your date see throughout the day. Bonus tip: Bring your date to Eastman Nature Center’s Big Woods Halloween event on Oct. 28.

Twin Cities Harvest Festival and Maze

Ready for a truly a-MAZE-ing date? Spend an afternoon at the Twin Cities Harvest Festival and Maze. Located in Brooklyn Park, this autumn attraction offers the largest corn maze in Minnesota – nearly 20 acres! You and your date can tackle the maze, and then challenge each other to a friendly (and flirtatious) pumpkin launching contest with the popular Pumpkin Slinger. Try to hit the target 150 yards away – winner gets bragging rights for the rest of the day. Round out your date with any of the other activities available, such as live music, a petting zoo, hayrides, gunny sack slide, corn seed pit, and pumpkin patch. Bonus tip: Pick out separate pumpkins (or one together) and design and carve them on your next date.

Open Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 23 - Oct. 29, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., tickets: $10 online, $12 at the gate.

Eidem Homestead

For a truly unique date, shut off your phones and travel back to the turn of the 20th century with a visit to the Eidem Homestead in Brooklyn Park, a 15-acre living history farm. Tour the grand, fully-restored Victorian house, enjoy the fall colors on the beautiful grounds, lounge on the front porch, visit the farm animals, and participate in activities that represent seasonal life on a farm, such as making fresh apple cider this fall. Bonus tip: Check out the Fall on the Farm event on Oct. 14.
