Outdoor Writers Conference in Minneapolis Northwest Generates Press for Local Outdoor Recreation
“Shooting is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.” I had never shot a gun up until last week. But that was how I was introduced to shooting sports at the Assocation of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers' (AGLOW) conference. Minneapolis Northwest Tourism had the honor of hosting this special group of outdoor media communicators for their annual conference at the DoubleTree by Hilton-Minneapolis North.

Minneapolis Northwest Tourism had the honor of hosting this special group of outdoor media communicators for their annual conference at the DoubleTree by Hilton-Minneapolis North last week. AGLOW is a passionate group that writes on subjects like hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and conservation for the top outdoor media outlets in the nation. The conference is their time to gather story ideas for the upcoming year, explore a new destination, try the latest outdoors equipment, and network with their peers. We were excited to introduce these journalists to all of the excellent outdoor opportunities Minneapolis Northwest has to offer.
Shooting Day, where corporate sponsors demo the latest in firearms, was just one of their many hands-on events. I got the chance to participate, and it was actually the first time I've shot a gun in my entire life. Naturally, I was a little apprehensive the first time I picked up a gun but I definitely have a new respect for shooting after trying it myself.
I started out at the 5-stand, or trap shooting station. It took me a little bit to get the hang of it, but eventually I nabbed 3 clays in a row. I got to try at least 8 different guns that afternoon; a 20-guage shot gun, a few different rifles, an AK-47, a .22 pistol, and a revolver. The experience with each gun is very different. I would’ve thought a pistol is a pistol, but you can definitely feel a difference in power between each. The biggest surprise for me was that most of the guns don’t recoil much. I was little afraid of getting conked in the face by the butt of the gun but that was never the case.
Overall the whole shooting experience was different than I thought, and so fun. The event was really for the professional outdoorsmen & women who might publish stories about their products, but sponsors were so patient and genuinely enjoyed teaching newbies like myself too. I went home after the shooting event and told my friends how much fun it was, now they are intrigued as well… which is exactly what these outdoor enthusiasts hope for!
Prior to arriving in Minneapolis Northwest some AGLOW members were unsure about holding an outdoor conference such as this so close to a major metropolitan area. However after the week's activities, they were pleasantly surprised to find how unexpectedly scenic our area is despite being just a few minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Us locals know that you don't have to go far from Minneapolis to find great hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation opportunities, and now the AGLOW members know too. They left here chock full of story ideas that will help spread the word about our great area.
