Blog: Atop the Foshay Tower Observation Deck

Minneapolis may not have the Empire State Building or Willis Tower, but it does have Foshay Tower.  If you’re ever in downtown Minneapolis you can’t miss Foshay Tower - it’s an obelisk that looks like the Washington Monument.  Many people don’t know this but at the very top of this 32-story structure is a museum and observation deck that is open all year-round (weather permitting).

If you’re ever in downtown Minneapolis you can’t miss Foshay Tower - it’s an obelisk that looks like the Washington Monument.  Many people don’t know this but at the very top of this 32-story structure is a museum and observation deck that is open all year-round (weather permitting).

I discovered this Minneapolis gem a few year ago when I moved to the Twin Cities with my husband.  It’s one of the places I try to take my friends and family when they come visit us.  I love showing them the breathtaking view of the city.  It’s so perfectly positioned in the Minneapolis skyline that practically everything can be seen from there (bet you didn’t know Target Center has a grass roof!).

I also felt very safe and secure when I was out on the observation deck.  Other observation decks usually give me that funny feeling like I'm going to fall, but not this one!  The concrete barrier was high enough to stop any uncertainties.  It’s also caged so when taking pictures through it, don’t drop your camera!

Aside from the observation deck, the museum is pretty neat.  It’s rather small but tells you the story of the building’s remarkable history through photographs and multimedia presentations.  Spend some time learning about how it became the first skyscraper built in the state of Minnesota and how it’s a unique example of art-deco architectural design and engineering.

In order to get up to the museum and observation deck, here are a few things you need to know:

1. Foshay Tower is now the W Hotel so you have to walk up to the hotel’s front desk to purchase tickets.  Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for teens & seniors and kids under 12 are free.

2. The front desk staff will give you an elevator key card and will direct you to the correct elevator (it’s the one on the right). Insert the key card into the special slot and it will grant you access to the 30th floor.

3. Once you get up to the 30th floor you walk right into the museum.

4. When you're ready, find the short flight of stairs up to the observation deck, go through a small door and there you are.

5. Enjoy the view.
