Sports enthusiasts around the country and world visited Minneapolis for Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium last February and made it a must-visit destination for football fans. The Minnesota Vikings play in this modern work of art and are poised to start the new season strong and with renewed determination after reaching the NFC Championship in January 2018. The team continues to generate waves of excitement with the acquisition of new quarterback Kirk Cousins and signing of Stefon Diggs, star of the “Minneapolis Miracle.” Look for the Vikings to have a rock-solid defense with Harrison Smith and Everson Griffen, and an explosive offense with the likes of Dalvin Cook and Adam Thielen. Come hear the Gjallarhorn and see these NFL stars in epic match-ups all season long.
With four National Championship notches on their belt, the Minnesota Lynx are the most successful professional sports franchise in the state. Their regular season ends August 19 and all indications point to a surge for the post-season. With the league’s current MVP, Sylvia Fowles, recent All-Star Game MVP, Maya Moore, and seasoned veteran, Lindsay Whalen, this feisty, passionate team should make a deep playoff run and return to the Championship in October. The Lynx battle it out at the newly renovated Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, which showcases a stunning chandelier in the shape of a basketball hoop in the main lobby. Further renovations include an all-new high-tech video screen over center court, comfortable plush stadium seats, expanded concourses and an increase in concession options. Follow the Lynx for up-to-date information on playoff tickets as they become available.
The Minnesota United (a.k.a. the Loons) finish their final season at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus before moving to the brand new, state-of-the-art Allianz Field in Saint Paul. A young team in its second year of existence, the United have steadily built their roster and developed a fiery spirit that will fit perfectly with the new stadium in 2019. The team improved its competitive depth with the mid-season acquisitions of Angelo Rodriguez and Romario Ibarra, and star forward Darwin Quintero has been the spark the team needed. Now, the Loons have made themselves relevant in the MLS playoff picture. Their final regular season home game is October 21 against the LA Galaxy. Cheer on this budding team as they make a playoff push this fall.
The State of Hockey revs up in early October with the start of the Minnesota Wild’s season, which opens October 4 in Colorado against the Avalanche, before returning to home ice at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul. The Wild have made the Stanley Cup playoffs the last six consecutive years and continue to provide plenty of action on the ice. The talented roster was shored up this off-season when fan-favorites Matt Dumba and Jason Zucker each inked five-year contracts, and fans are excited to welcome back players like Eric Staal, Mikael Granlund and Nino Niederreiter. If you’re looking for literal non-stop action, the scorching hot Wild provide it tenfold.
One of the best ways to enjoy the last bit of summer is with summer’s ultimate game – baseball, and the Minnesota Twins provide an optimal experience at Target Field, just a stone’s throw from Target Center in Minneapolis. This impressive ballpark incorporates thoughtful Minnesota touches throughout, such as Minnesota-mined granite and limestone on the exterior, and bronze statues of iconic former Twins players like Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva – must-sees for any baseball fanatic. Food options at Target Field expand every year, too, giving fans all of their favorites and additional options for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. Your last chance to catch a game at Target Field is September 28-30, which is also Fan Appreciation Weekend. Get to the games early for fun giveaways!
Get ready to howl at the moon when the Minnesota Timberwolves storm the court at Target Center this fall. The Wolves treated fans to an exciting finish last season with a winner-takes-all match up against the Denver Nuggets that sent them to the playoffs. This year, they’re out to prove they are not a team to be brushed off in a heavily stacked Western Conference, showing plenty of star power in Jimmy Butler, Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and play-marker Derrick Rose. The Wolves also play in the newly remodeled Target Center and provide a fantastic game-time experience for basketball and sports fans alike. Splurge on the Lexus Courtside Club or the new TCL Theater Boxes, inspired by the opera. Enjoy the game from your own reserved table in an all-inclusive lounge where you and your guests can eat, drink and socialize.
Fall brings the start of a new school year, which means new seasons of all your favorite college sports. Follow the University of Minnesota Gophers this year as they tackle major sports in men’s and women’s divisions. The Gophers are part of the Big Ten Conference and play at a number of fan-favorite venues in Minneapolis. Perhaps most notable is TCF Bank Stadium, home of Gophers Football, followed by Williams Arena (a.k.a. The Barn) for Gopher Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Ridder Arena for women’s hockey and Mariucci Arena for men’s hockey. Gopher teams have won more than 30 National Championships in addition to hundreds of team and individual conference titles.
Speaking of college sports, the NCAA Men’s Final Four is coming to Minneapolis April 6-8, 2019! You can be sure that the city that just hosted the Super Bowl will go all out for the biggest college event of the year. Plan ahead by booking a convenient hotel in Minneapolis Northwest that promises to keep you comfortable and courtside.
