Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal : Wahlburgers plans its second Minnesota restaurant

By Alex Van Abbema

Wahlburgers Restaurants, a burger chain founded by Paul, Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, will get its second Minnesota location in Maple Grove.

Iowa-based Hy-Vee Inc., which is acting as a franchisee for the Boston-based chain and last year opened a Wahlburgers at Mall of America, plans to open a 6,128-square-foot restaurant at The Village at Arbor Lakes, the retail development from Bloomington-based Doran Cos.

According to a proposal filed with the city by Doran, the restaurant would have 202 seats for dining inside, and another 35 seats on an outdoor patio.

The proposal was approved by the Maple Grove Planning Commission yesterday, and will go before the Maple Grove City Council on Monday, March 18. Joe Hogeboom, a director of community and economic development with Maple Grove, said that Wahlburgers plans to break ground on the project later this spring, and should open later this year.

Wahlburgers currently has 29 locations in 19 states and Canada. The Business Journal reported in 2017 that Hy-Vee, of West Des Moines, Iowa, plans to own and operate 26 Wahlburgers in seven Midwestern states. Hy-Vee's Market Grille restaurants also sell Wahlburgers-branded menu items.

Wahlburgers' restaurants offer burgers, sandwiches, bowls and salads. Each location also has a full service bar.

Wahlburgers would be one of several new restaurant tenants moving into the ongoing Village at Arbor Lakes project. Hogeboom said that Ichiddo Ramen, which has existing locations in Minneapolis and St. Paul, will open a restaurant at The Village at Arbor Lakes in April. Minneapolis-based Crisp & Green will open its fifth store, and second location from franchisee Kris Humphries, at the development later this spring.

A 162-unit apartment building and a 3,700-square-foot retail facility from Doran Cos. were also approved for the site by the planning commission on March 11.
