KSTP: “Topgolf” Prepares to Open in Brooklyn Center

By: Chris Long

Topgolf, a rapidly-growing franchise that's a mash-up of a golf driving range and a bowling alley, is set to open its first facility in Minnesota and 46th location worldwide. The exact opening date hasn't been announced, but is expected to be before the end of September.

Drivers along I-694 have seen Topgolf's new massive 65,000-square foot structure rise over the last several months. The Brooklyn Center site features a three-story facility with 102 hitting bays along with multiple bars, dining areas and private spaces.

The focus of Topgolf are the hitting bays, where players choose from several different game variations all stemming from hitting special RFID-chipped golf balls into targets of various sizes at varying distances.  Scoring is kept automatically as players are rewarded for accurate shots into the targets.

Hitting bays are rented by the hour with pricing scaled on time of day: $25/hr from opening until noon, $35/hr from noon to 5 p.m. and $45/hr from 5 p.m. to close. Up to six players are permitted on a single bay at the same time. Military (active duty and veterans), police, fire and EMS personnel with valid I.D receive a 20% discount. Corporate and individual premium memberships are offered.

A $5 one-time membership fee is required before playing Topgolf for the first time. (Tip: sign up online before your first visit to save time by avoiding the sign-up process when you arrive. You can also make bay reservations online.)

Golf clubs are provided as part of the hourly rental fee, but golfers can bring their own clubs if preferred.

The outdoor hitting bays resemble a bowling lane. Golfers stand at the front to make their shots, while others can sit on couches or at high-top tables situated behind the hitting bay.

The bays have three overhead heating elements which allow Topgolf to remain open year-round. The facility will be open 363 days a year, closing only on Thanksgiving and Christmas.  There are also partitions between some of the bays to offer shelter from wind. Many of the bars and dining areas have garage door-style partitions that can either open up to the hitting bays or remain closed in colder weather.

Topgolf organizes weekly leagues, tournaments/fundraisers and events.

There is also a special program for children called KidZone and junior memberships are offered which include special offers for kids.

High school golf teams and charities serving youth are allowed to practice free-of-charge Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m to 5 p.m.

Topgolf Minneapolis is located near the intersection of I-694 and Hwy 252 at 6240 N. Camden Avenue in Brooklyn Center.
